The sun rises over the dreary town of Tenindo, a day's march from the Brindisi Gap. The sentries are all weary and worried. Just a few hours earlier, a runner had returned from a scouting mission, and had reported a strike force of... things emerging from the Abyss. They were headed for the town, and appeared to be armed.
A man yells from a rooftop. He can see a dark group of travellers on the horizon from the direction of the Gap. Alarm bells are rung, and all able-bodied residents of the town are called to arms.
This turns out to be worryingly few; indeed, the majority had been conscripted in the push for a proper, uniformed Leccenian army to help repel the attacks.
They were conscripted eight months ago. Nobody has heard from them since.
*****
"Okay, get out onto the street!" the militia captain yells. A group of people is belched forth from the inn, amongst which are Guinevere, Waldemar and Hector. They and two frail men are sent to a wide street near the Gap side of the town. You can actually see the nearest incoming forces; they aren't far away.
You are stood in the mouth of a street; behind you is a T junction leading left and right. Ahead is the route out of town, and you can just about see two imposing figures heading your way. You're stood in a loose battle group, and the two men (one in a light brown outfit and scarf, wielding a pike hesitantly, and another in faded green overalls, holding a blacksmith's hammer much more confidently, but still anxiously) are flanking the three of you. The hammer man chuckles nervously. "S-so, you expect this when you got here, friends? I sure didn't."
The other man nods worriedly. "W-we'll be fine, just hold steady, and we'll be fine. What are you all going to d-do?"
Hammer man snorts. "Try to stay alive."
Battle incoming; one turn.

"I... wasn't expecting... to be put on the front lines..." Guinevere responded with a bit of fear in her voice, the staff in her hands groaning at her white knuckle grip. "B-but as I p-promised to h-help... I g-guess I'm stuck h-here... L-Let's try t-to keep c-calm." Taking a deep breath and looking over the potions in her bag again, Guinevere sighs, waiting for them to come closer.

Background/Description: He started out as a serf for a higher lord, where he worked long hours harvesting crops for little, and sometimes no, compensation. It was this trait that taught him how to live off of what others gave him, both willingly and not. Hector remains silent as he awaits the enemy forces, holding his wooden staff in front of him defensively.

Name: Waldemar Nische
Gender: Male
Age: 76
Background/Description: Waldemar's life is best described as being boring, barely worth of description. His early life was a shelter, demanding parents have made sure to crush his youthful, imaginative mind under the weight of responsibilities, damnating his every error and conjuring up low self-esteem that would later prove crucial to the young wizard's career.
Having learned all he could have been offered, Waldemar joined the academy, where his craft would be put to test. Under the strain of constant labor, trying to prove himself to others, but most importantly, to himself, Waldemar managed to aquire a respectable position of a mentor in only 10 years, a position which he would hold for the next three decades.
Now decrepit and racked by his tired mind, he is to face, what is very probable to be his only journey.
Being a mage his whole life, hell, teaching magic as it is to the future generations, Waldemar was a versatile spellcaster with a wide array of various conjurations at his disposal. He proved to be especially frail due to his old age, but the wisdom that came with such, more than made up for it.
And yet his wisdom did not aid him when dealing with a legendary Sphinx he met by chance on his way to the town of Aereo. The sphinx threatened to attack him, and Waldemar was more than happy to slog it out with the beast. However, he chose instead to take its offer of answering its question. He did so, and was correct, and the Sphinx offered him a single wish in addition to his freedom. This is where Waldemar made a major error. He was getting old. He was tired. He was nearer the dark embrace of death than he cared to be, and he asked the Sphinx to make him "youthful again".
This was his mistake. Youthful again. The sphinx reverted him to a body of a 29 year old, and the mind he had before he joined the magical academy as a mentor and teacher in that far off land all those years ago. He had lost everything; his skill, his knowledge, his proficiency.
It has been one year since he made his crucial error. His personal age has begun to bleed through, and he is not as skilled at picking up the magical art as he once was, much to his chagrin.

Waldemar holds firm and turns to Guinevere. He doesn't find any words of encouragement that could sound sincere, he turns away again and readies himself.

The man with the pike shifts as the two forms become discernable. "O-oh, fu-fuck, why did it have t-to be Orcs?"
The hammer man lifts his weapon grimly. "Hold steady, going to be a difficu-AAAARGH!"
The scream is punctuated by a thump as one of Orcs charges! The hammer man is thrown into the window of a nearby shop with an almighty crash. The orc slows and takes a deep, rasping breath and lumbers in after the man with the hammer. The pike man screams, fleeing back as the second Orc approaches you!
The Orc attacks first!
A note on battle. I'll be telling you the rolls you score; usually, it's possible to work out an enemy's armour class and stats from this. If you're attacked, you'll parry automatically as best as you can. Important things to note are in bold. No guarantee that it'll be emboldened every time, so make sure you note these things. If you can't already tell, the order for battle is determined by your REF score, highest first.
It swings its cudgel at Hector! (rolls 9 on hit roll) Hector parries with his staff!
Guinevere is next up in battle, followed by whoever from Hector and Waldemar makes an action first. Post in any order you please, I'll be posting them in the relevant order in my update post. You need not say how you attack a foe, that's a standard, but sometimes, if you can see an opportunity, go for it. There are slight adjustments for certain moves, such as attacking weaker points where they exist, like the neck, or the knees. Be mindful of what you're fighting; Orcs' bones are a lot bigger than humans'.

Hector curses silently as he takes a step away from the attacking Orc, taking the moment to tighten his grip on his staff. He then swings the staff down at the Orc's head.
Attack the Orc with his staff.

Gulping and clamping down on her fear, Guinevere rushes toward the Orc, Hector and Waldemar are currently engaging, bringing her staff down to smash against it.

Guinevere strikes with her staff! (4 on d20) She hits it dead centre of its chest with the metal cap on the end of the staff. (rolls 4 on d6, as per Staff stats) The orc roars in pain and stumbles back! A clean hit! (3 damage, as per Staff stats)
Hector swings his staff across towards the orc (4/d20) and smacks it straight in the stomach. (3/d6) The orc doubles over, growling slightly in pain.
Waldemar's shortsword swings down at its shoulder (2/d20, by God) and it (7/d8) embeds itself in the orc's skin, spraying dark red blood over the blade. As Waldemar pulls the blade out, the orc falls to the floor, lifeless.
The other orc emerges from behind you; his hands are covered in blood. Presumably this is what remains of the hammer man. The orc lumbers up towards Waldemar and swings the cudgel down. (12/d20) He misses, hitting the ground.
